Floricultural Research Station, Rajendranagar, Hyderabad.

Introduction

The All India Coordinated Research Project (AICRP) on Floriculture at Agricultural Research Institute (ARI), Rajendranagar, Hyderabad was established in the year 1986-87 to carry out the inter disciplinary research on floriculture. The Floriculture AICRP scheme, Hyderabad came under the purview of Andhra Pradesh Horticultural University from June 2007 after the separation from ANGRAU which was renamed later as Dr. YSRHU during the year 2011. Later after the formation of Telangana state, it came under the purview of Sri Konda Laxman Telangana Horticultural University and was renamed as Floricultural Research Station in the year 2014.

Mandate Crops:

Among the AICRP coordinated centers, Hyderabad was identified as a testing center of elite varieties of flower crops. Initially, the research work was oriented on rose, gladiolus, chrysanthemum and orchids later considering the research needs and potentiality marigold, gladiolus, chrysanthemum, jasmine and tuberose were allotted as mandate flower crops on which the ongoing research work is being carried out at the center.

Thrust Area:

Collection, evaluation and maintenance of genetic resources and development of improved varieties for flower quality and yield.
Evaluation of newly developed cultivars of ICAR institutes and SAUs for their suitability in this region.
Standardization of fertigation schedules of loose and cut flower crops.
Standardization of new production technologies in mandate crops.
Standardization of postharvest management practices for improving the shelf life of mandate flowers.
Standardization of improved IPM and IDM practices for control of major pest and diseases in Flower crops.

Important achievements:

Research station is involved in Collection, conservation and maintenance of germplasm in commercial flower crops , Chrysanthemum (> 95 nos), Gladiolus (30 nos), Marigold (14 nos), Jasmine (11 nos), Tuberose (26 nos), China Aster (13 nos), Crossandra (4 nos), Hibiscus (26 nos), Heliconia ( 11 nos) and many other ornamental foliage and flowering plants
High Yielding Marigold varieties BM-4, Punjab Gainada -1 are popularized among farmers by distributing seed samples and field demonstration visits.
Local collections of chrysanthemums , Poornima White and Yellow, Paper white, HCC-2 (Palapitta) and varieties of china Aster viz., Phule Ganesh varieties, Arka Kamini and local Pink, White are popularized among the farmers by the center
Planting materials of chrysanthemum rooted cuttings, gladiolus corms, tuberose bulbs, china aster seed, marigold seed and winter annual seed are supplied to the farmers and urban citizens in the form of seed kit.
Fertigation schedules developed for important commercial flower crops like Marigold,Tuberose,Chrysanthemum and China aster
Demonstration of low-cost production technology in shade nets and protected cultivation of cut flowers like gerbera, orchids, fillers like gypsophilla.
In collaboration with the AICRP-DFR,Pune training programs are organized to the farmers to create awareness on cultivation of high value commercial flower crops
Training programs on Dry Flower Technology for students, Rural Youth and tribal women were organized under RKVY project
Floricultural Research Station provides opportunities for field visit and gain knowledge on flower production technology for various college students, school children, farmers, garden enthusiasts, urban folks etc.
Published literature on Poola Sagu-samagra yajamanyam (Loose flower cultivation and management) , Rakshitha Poola Sagu ( Protected cultivation of flower crops) and Dry Flower Technology books along with Pamphlets (6 nos) and extension folders (3 nos) on flower crops, tuberose pest management and dry flower value added products.
